Pros
- Very sharp 4K resolution
- Natural and rich colours
- G-Sync enhances the gaming experience
Cons
- High power consumption
Resolution
The Asus UHD monitor displays native content with excellent sharpness. Even downscaling to HD resolution is very clean. However, you have to set up the picture via the graphics card or Windows because the monitor doesn’t have any options in the control menu.
Colour & contrast
The colours are something to behold. Even ex works; the colour space coverage is almost perfect. The contrast could be a little better, and you might also miss a deep black because the display remains slightly greyish. Dark scenes tend to be bright.
Brightness & legibility
The high viewing angle stability is excellent for sitting with friends in front of the screen. The illumination of the display could be more convincing; some glowing spots cannot be overlooked in the dark. Customers also complain about increasing backlight bleeding and brightening when viewed from the side.
Performance
Speed & Picture Build-up
The PG27AQ needs to be faster for professional gamers, as the refresh rate is only 60 Hz. In combination with the G-Sync function, you still get a great gaming experience; even fast games run smoothly. However, you should have a correspondingly powerful graphics card at your disposal.
Power consumption
According to Asus, the gaming monitor consumes up to 90W. In practice, the values are not that high – they range from 40 to 60 W – but the power consumption is still comparatively high. Even in standby, the consumption of just under 1 W is already in the higher range.
Connections
Thanks to the DisplayPort, you can take full advantage of the 60 Hz refresh rate, provided you have the appropriate graphics card. Unfortunately, the HDMI interface does not yet offer the more modern 2.0 standard. Two USB ports are available, but they could be more practical for quickly charging a mobile device.
Ergonomics
The monitor is stable on the large stand and does not wobble when adjusted. You get everything possible in terms of ergonomic functions. The various settings can be made quickly and with one hand.
Range of functions
You can set up the monitor right out of the box because the stand is already pre-assembled. The design of the control menu is straightforward, and the operation is also easy. However, more valuable options for colour management and setting up the picture for interpolated content must be available.
