Brother MFC-J5740DW

Pros

  • Clean print quality including A3 print function
  • Large paper tray
  • Automatic document feeder for scans and copies
  • Convenient touch screen operation

Cons

  • Moderate print speed

The Brother MFC-J5740DW is a large format inkjet printer for office use that can also print in A3 format thanks to its large print engine. In addition to its unique printing capability, it offers all sorts of office printing conveniences, including an automatic feeder for scans and copies. The latter works automatically on both sides, which does not happen too often, even in this price range between £300 and £400. The two-part paper tray offers a large total capacity. Even if you use one tray only for A3 paper, there is still room for a paper supply of 300 pages in A4. The print quality is clean, as you would expect from Brother, but the print speed is relatively poor for an office printer.

Workgroups with high print volumes should look for faster alternatives, such as an A3 colour laser printer. Brother offers ink cartridges with a large capacity. These reduce the cost per page for printing A4 documents in black and white to around 2p – a good value. With full-size cartridges, the price rises by about a third.
