You come home and realise the heating has run all day for nobody. Or the living room is still being warmed at two in the morning. A smart radiator thermostat is aimed squarely at that: it matches the temperature to when a room is actually used, so the boiler works when there is a point to it and not otherwise.
Six models are covered below, drawn from a field of nineteen tested. The grades quoted are the test's own, on a scale where a lower number is better — 1.0 is the top of the scale and anything from 1.5 to 2.5 is a good result. Each machine is also graded separately on operation, equipment and functions, weighted 35, 35 and 30 per cent respectively.

Overall Winner: tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat X
Graded 1.3 (very good) overall, with a perfect 1.0 for operation and 1.0 for equipment, and 2.1 for functions. It uses Matter and communicates over Thread, which makes it more flexible but breaks compatibility with the maker's earlier devices. It needs a Thread border router as its base, and in exchange it runs independently of the cloud and works offline; the base joins the home network over Wi-Fi.
Installation is simple, and six valve adapters are in the box — the detail that decides whether a thermostat fits your radiators at all. Response time is very good and the valve opens quickly. The dial-and-tap operation is reliable, the device itself adjusts in 0.5-degree steps, and the backlit LC display is easy to read. Voice control is available, and power comes from a rechargeable battery with a USB-C socket rather than disposables.
The caveat is commercial rather than technical. Geofencing and the automatic turn-down when a window is opened both require a monthly subscription. The app is otherwise well equipped, including humidity measurement, and the schedule accepts an unlimited number of switch points — but there are no alternative schedules for a holiday or a party, and no window sensor can be paired. Budget Pick: Sonoff TRVZB
Graded 2.5 (good), with 2.2 for operation, 2.6 for equipment and 2.7 for functions. It suits smart-home enthusiasts, because it reports an unusually large number of parameters back to the base station. It speaks Zigbee 3.0, so any Zigbee hub will do, including the maker's own inexpensive one, and it slots into an existing Zigbee mesh well while having good range of its own. Matter is supported but needs a bridge.
Its most useful trait for the privacy-minded: the cloud functions work without registration, and an account is only needed to manage users. Time control also keeps running with no internet connection at all. Installation is trouble-free with several adapters supplied, though the three AA batteries are not included. The dial adjusts in 0.5-degree steps, and the display is backlit but not permanently on.

Best Value From a Big System: eQ-3 Homematic IP HmIP-eTRV-2
Graded 2.4 (good) overall — 2.3 for operation, 3.2 for equipment, and a strong 1.5 for functions. It mounts without fuss. It talks to its access point over a proprietary radio standard, and that base has no Wi-Fi: it reaches the router by LAN cable only, so check you have a spare port before buying.
Two AA batteries should last two years according to the maker. The display is backlit and always on, and the temperature adjusts in 0.5-degree steps at the radiator. App control works well, with Google and Alexa voice support, though Apple HomeKit is not supported. You get three separate schedules with up to 13 switch points a day each, automatic open-window detection, and the option of adding a dedicated window sensor, with a broad accessory range behind it.

The Step Up: eQ-3 Homematic IP Flex (HmIP-eTRV-F)
Graded 1.8 (good), with 2.8 for equipment and 1.5 for functions — the second-best overall grade here. It is excellent to operate, adjusting in 0.5-degree steps at the device. As above, the radio is proprietary and it needs the maker's access point, which again is LAN only.
Its distinguishing feature is the display: a power-saving e-ink panel that is easy to read and permanently on, though not backlit. Battery life is quoted at three years from two AA cells. Installation is simple, with the instructions shown directly on the display as you go. Google and Alexa voice control work; HomeKit does not. No registration and no subscription are required.

Most Capable: Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600
Graded 2.1 (good), with 2.4 for operation, 2.6 for equipment and the best functions grade in the group at 1.1. The feature list is the longest here: several thermostats can be synchronised, ventilation detection and window-contact pairing are built in, and it logs temperature over time. The drive is quiet and voice control through Alexa and Google Home works well.
The complication is Matter. It can be set up over Zigbee or true Matter-over-Thread, and in Matter mode it joins a system without a hub at all — but only basic functions come with it. External sensors, adaptive heating logic and local automations work only over Zigbee with the maker's hub, so Matter users have to build those rules by hand. Window handling is also curtailed in Matter mode: the valve reopens after 30 minutes unless a manual routine says otherwise. Thread range is rated 5 steps rather than 7.
Other criticisms are physical and worth knowing: a spongy button, a dial with no detents, no always-on display, mandatory registration, and small translation errors in an otherwise reliable app. It offers seven switch points a day, no humidity measurement, runs on two AA cells, and its base station connects by either LAN or Wi-Fi. Straight to the Router: Eve Thermo (5th generation)
Graded 2.2 (good), with 2.7 for operation and a perfect 1.0 for functions. It uses the open Matter-over-Thread standard, so any Thread border router will bring it into a smart home, with no proprietary base to buy.
Functionally it is the most generous here: unlimited schedules with unlimited switch points, and temperatures are logged. It can be controlled offline from the phone app — but editing schedules locally requires the thermostat to be linked online through Apple Home or Google Home, and if you would rather not, you must write your own Matter routines. The Android app has rough edges.
Direct control is where it disappoints, and it is the reason for that middling operation grade. The display orientation cannot be changed and has no always-on mode; the capacitive buttons sit flush with the housing, so they cannot be found by touch; and there is no dial, which makes setting a temperature with up and down buttons tedious. What to Check Before You Buy
The hub. A networked thermostat needs a control centre, either built into the router or connected to it — that is how the parts talk to each other and to the app. Not every thermostat works with every base, so confirm compatibility before buying. Check the connection too: some bases join over Wi-Fi, others require a LAN cable, which means a free port on the router. If the thermostats and the base come from the same maker, they generally pair more easily and the app gives less trouble; mixed setups take patience.
Airing rooms, with or without a window contact. Behaviour when a window opens is the biggest practical difference between these devices. Many have built-in detection and turn themselves down, some better than others, and networked models sometimes tell nearby thermostats so a whole room responds together. Most, though, only react properly and quickly when separate window contacts are fitted. Many makers sell those as accessories — not all do.
Manual control. Not every smart thermostat has a control on the device itself, and anyone who has stayed in a guest room where the heating was left wide open knows why that matters. Turning a dial is quicker than unlocking a phone and opening an app. If that matters to you, look specifically for a dial or buttons.
Whether remote access costs anything. Turning every radiator off as you leave for a fortnight, or warming the house on the way home, is among the best reasons to buy one of these. But not all remote access is free — check before you buy whether internet control is included or sits behind a subscription.
The cost of the base. The hub is a second purchase on top of the thermostats. It is usually worth settling on one system so everything is compatible and there is only one app to learn, and many makers sell starter sets with the base included.
How a Radiator Thermostat Actually Works
Every radiator thermostat, smart or not, does one job: it controls the pin on the radiator valve. On a classic head, turning the handle — typically from a snowflake for frost protection up to setting 5 — backs the pin out of the valve and opens the hot-water path. Which setting equals which temperature depends on the maker, though setting 3 often corresponds to 20 °C.
The head senses room temperature with a sensor element. When the room runs warmer than you asked for, a heat-sensitive material expands, presses on the pin and closes the valve slightly; when it runs cold, the material contracts, the pin is released and the valve opens.
A smart thermostat works on exactly the same principle. The difference is that the setting no longer comes from your hand on the dial but from an app or a programmed schedule, and that several heads can be networked so a whole home is controlled centrally. Many will also spot a window being opened on their own.
Swapping One Over
A conventional thermostat with a turning handle comes off easily. Turn it to its highest setting first, then loosen the union nut between the head and the radiator with a pair of pliers and pull the head off. The new one goes on in reverse order.
Fitting a smart head works much the same way, with some model-specific extras — which is why the supplied instructions matter, and why the number of valve adapters in the box is worth checking against your radiators before you order.
What the Grades Mean
Three weighted categories make up the overall mark. Operation, at 35 per cent, covers how easily the head installs and how well it can be driven directly: which controls exist, what can be set besides temperature, whether there is a child lock, whether buttons have a clear action, how finely the dial adjusts, and how clear the display is. The app's usability, voice control and remote access are judged here too.
Equipment, also 35 per cent, covers build quality and what comes in the box — how many adapter rings, whether humidity is measured as well as temperature — along with the noise the mechanism makes. Radios count here as well: a proprietary link to the base scores lower than Zigbee, Wi-Fi, DECT or Thread, because open standards make range and combination far easier. A central panel controlling several thermostats is welcome.
Functions, at 30 per cent, covers whether the head reacts automatically when a room is aired, either by spotting the sudden temperature drop or through window contacts. Because room air is not necessarily measured at the coldest point of the room, being able to correct that reading with an offset temperature counts. More schedules and switch points score better, and the active schedule should keep running even if the base station fails. For judging a heating strategy, the app should record the heating curve — target against actual — over a long period, and manage users, rooms and scenarios. Comfort features such as presence detection and geofencing count in its favour.
