Our Verdict
The Blackroll Recovery Pillow offers two support levels in one memory-foam pillow: a flatter side for back sleepers and a firmer arch for side sleepers. German-made, travel-friendly and backed by a 90-day trial - only front sleepers reach its limits.

The Blackroll Recovery Pillow won the test over with its flexibility: two surfaces of different firmness, a compact memory-foam core and a clear ergonomic shape are designed to keep the neck stable in every sleeping position. The test shows how well that works in practice, where the pillow's strengths lie — and which sleeper types reach its limits.
One Pillow, Two Sides
Neck-support pillows should cradle the head stably, relieve the cervical spine and adapt to different sleeping positions. The Recovery Pillow offers unusual flexibility because it suits all positions — according to the manufacturer, even front sleepers. One side supports the neck less, letting the head lie lower, which particularly suits front and back sleepers; flip it over and the support increases markedly, courtesy of the integrated ergonomic head hollow and neck arch that are the pillow's defining features. The firmer side is intended for side sleepers.
Materials and Practicalities
Made in Germany to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, the pillow ships in a water-repellent travel bag and rolls up small for the journey. The memory foam is pure polyurethane — free of plasticisers, according to the manufacturer, and partly produced with natural oils such as castor oil for a gentler footprint — with ventilation channels in the core for a pleasant sleeping climate. The cover (60 per cent polyester, 40 per cent viscose) washes at 40 degrees and survived the wash test without shrinking or losing shape. A generous bonus: the pillow can be trialled for up to 90 days, with free delivery and returns in Germany and Austria.
Comfort in Practice
The two support levels are clearly distinguishable. Tested by two sleepers — one male at 180 centimetres, one female at 160 — on both a hard and a soft mattress, the results were largely convincing. On the soft mattress the taller tester lay relaxed and well supported on his back, while the smaller tester preferred the hollow side, as recommended for front sleepers; on the hard mattress both found adequate stability. In the side position the pillow convinced both testers on the soft mattress, but on the hard mattress it sat slightly too low for the smaller tester's 46-centimetre shoulder width, letting the head tip slightly — the broader-shouldered tester fared better.
Where It Struggles
Lying face-down on the soft mattress, both testers found the pillow too high, with head and neck kinking slightly. Front sleeping is therefore only conditionally served, the one clear weakness in an otherwise strong showing.
Verdict
The Blackroll Recovery Pillow scores with its two distinct support levels, fine workmanship and an ergonomic shape that benefits side and back sleepers above all. It lies especially well on soft mattresses, while broader-shouldered sleepers on hard mattresses may wish for a little more height. Front sleepers should temper expectations — but as a high-quality, flexible pillow in genuine travel format with a fair 90-day trial, it makes a very strong case.
