These are two of the best in-ear noise-cancelling earbuds you can buy, and the choice between them is really about which ecosystem and priorities suit you. The Apple AirPods Pro 3 lean on seamless Apple integration and a new health trick, while the Sony WF-1000XM5 focus on sound quality and Hi-Res codec support. Both excel at silencing the world. This comparison draws only on the complete published reviews of each pair; Truthful Reviews has not independently tested either.
Both are compact in-ear designs that sit securely. Each AirPods Pro 3 earbud weighs 5.55 g — marginally heavier than the 5.3 g of the outgoing Pro 2 — and they measure 30.9 x 19.2 x 27 mm and hold firmly in the ear. Their case is both lighter and smaller than before, at 44 g against the Pro 2's 50.8 g, and slimmer than that model's 60.6 x 45.2 x 21.7 mm footprint. Apple has also given them an IP57 rating — meaning genuine dust resistance and protection against temporary immersion, unusually rugged for earbuds. The Sony WF-1000XM5 come in at around 12 g and carry only an IPX4 splash rating, so they will shrug off sweat and rain but are not built for a dunking. The Sony, for their part, are a noticeably smaller and lighter redesign of the previous generation, and both pairs let you use a single earbud on its own and adjust the noise mode and volume straight from the earbuds. Both connect over Bluetooth 5.3. If durability matters, the AirPods clearly lead here.
Sony has long owned this category on audio quality. The WF-1000XM5 use an 8.4 mm driver with a 20 Hz to 40 kHz frequency response and support the LDAC codec for Hi-Res streaming from compatible sources, alongside AAC and SBC — the published test described them as pure pleasure to listen to. The AirPods Pro 3 sound noticeably better than the Pro 2 before them and are excellent within Apple's world, but they stick to AAC with no LDAC, so Android listeners chasing Hi-Res lose out. Apple also reuses the H2 chip first introduced in 2022, which looks conservative on paper, yet the reworked acoustics still leave the outgoing Pro 2 comfortably behind. In short, for outright audio flexibility and Hi-Res on Android the Sony leads; for a polished sound tightly tuned to Apple devices the AirPods are hard to fault.
This is close, because both are among the very best. The Sony WF-1000XM5 have been a reference for active noise cancellation, silencing low-frequency rumble with ease. The AirPods Pro 3 push Apple's cancellation further still, gaining a few dB in key frequencies and improving passive isolation thanks to a better in-ear seal, with transparency and call handling rated as near-perfect. Either pair will quieten a commute or an open-plan office; the AirPods edge ahead on transparency and voice calls, the Sony on sheer low-end suppression.
The two are evenly matched on paper. The AirPods Pro 3 are rated for 8 h with noise cancellation on, 10 h with it off, and around 24 h in total with the case. The Sony WF-1000XM5 also last about 8 h with cancellation active — one test measured 8 h 45 min at moderate volume — and climb to nearly 12 h with cancellation off, with the case adding roughly 16 h for a similar all-in figure. Both recharge over USB-C, with the Sony earbuds topping up in about 1.5 h, so in daily use neither will leave you short.
This is where they diverge most. The AirPods Pro 3 run on Apple's H2 chip and add a new heart-rate sensor for workouts, pair instantly with iPhones, iPads and Macs, and offer excellent hands-free Siri and beam-forming microphones — the whole package is built around the Apple ecosystem. The Sony WF-1000XM5 counter with that LDAC Hi-Res support, a choice of Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri, and Sony's mature companion app with extensive equaliser and adaptive controls, plus multipoint pairing across two devices. The AirPods pair instantly and hop automatically between an iPhone, iPad and Mac, while the Sony rely on their app and manual multipoint to switch between two devices at once. Apple owners will value the AirPods' integration and health features; Android owners and tinkerers will prefer the Sony's codecs and control.
Choose the Apple AirPods Pro 3 if you live in Apple's world: seamless pairing across your devices, class-leading transparency and calls, a new heart-rate sensor, rugged IP57 protection and 8 hours of battery with noise cancellation — accepting the lack of LDAC and a carried-over H2 chip. Choose the Sony WF-1000XM5 if sound and flexibility come first: an 8.4 mm driver with a wide 20 Hz to 40 kHz range, LDAC Hi-Res audio, reference-grade noise cancellation and a deep tuning app — accepting a splash-only IPX4 rating and looser integration outside the Sony app. The AirPods are the best-integrated earbuds for iPhone owners; the Sony are the more flexible, audio-first choice, especially on Android.
