Excellent value
Anyone who wants to cycle or garden through filthy weather needs rain trousers, and the McKinley Carlow convinces as a complete package: waterproof, robust and comfortable, quick to pull on, and blessed with an individually adjustable waistband.
A Versatile Overtrouser
An unexpected downpour can spoil any outdoor plan — unless the right kit is to hand. The Carlow is a versatile overtrouser uniting comfort and function, tested here in both the women's and men's versions on the bike and in the garden; both convinced. McKinley is the outdoor own-brand of Intersport, and the Carlow weighs 360 grams in 100 per cent polyester, built from two layers: one waterproof, one breathable.
Thoughtful Details
A zipped pocket sits on the left, its seams welded against the wet. The waistband combines a zip and button with belt loops and — more importantly — two press studs each side for individual adjustment, sensible given how much can be worn underneath; an elastic panel at the rear keeps everything in place. Pulling the trousers on over thick hiking boots is easy because the outer leg seams carry full-length zips, letting the trousers split completely into two halves; a storm flap protects the zip, and hook-and-loop tabs adjust the hem width at the ankle.
Waterproofing in Practice
Comfort is nothing without dryness, so the Carlow faced filthy weather on the bike and during garden work — and kept its wearer dry throughout. A 10,000-millimetre water column makes the trousers sufficiently waterproof to withstand heavy rain with ease.
Who They Suit
The overtrousers serve hikers and cyclists equally, and anyone simply walking the dog in the rain cuts a fine figure in them too. They fold down compactly, though sadly without a stuff sack for transport — hardly a grave omission.
Verdict
The McKinley Carlow scores with high functionality and well-considered details. The 10,000-millimetre water column keeps you reliably dry, the multi-point adjustable waistband delivers an optimal fit over any number of layers, and the full-length leg zips make them effortless to don over boots. For the low price, an outstanding pair of rain trousers.
