Test of the Segway Navimow X4 (X420): A 4WD Robot Mower Built for Large Grounds

There are gardens for which usual robot mowers are simply not made.

Terrain over 2,000 m², significant slopes, narrow passages between two zones, thick grass that resists — in these conditions, most models run out of breath, slip, or stop right where you would expect them most.

The Segway Navimow X420 has been designed precisely for these cases. Four driven wheels, two cutting motors of 180 W, a working width of 43 cm, and an announced ability to climb slopes up to 84%: it is the most ambitious robot mower Segway offers.

The X420 is not addressed to the same user profile as the H210 or the i2 models. Here, this is a heavy-duty work robot, noisy, designed to cover large surfaces regularly and without supervision.

Technical Specifications

The unit was provided by Segway for testing.

General Presentation

The X420 is the entry-level of the X4 series, which, in the Segway universe, already means something.

It covers surfaces over 2,000 m², where the H2 and i2 models begin to struggle, and shares its architecture with the X430 and X450 which respectively go up to 3,000 and 5,000 m². What changes between them is mainly the battery capacity. What distinguishes them from the rest of the range is the 4WD — the four driven wheels.

Xero-Turn AWD System

The Xero-Turn AWD system is another key feature of this range. Four driven wheels, eccentric-steering front wheels, and a motorised pivoting rear axle: the combination allows the robot to make U-turns on the spot without the tank movement that tears up grass on other models. Fixed pivot robots can leave furrows, especially on wet ground.

Double Front Suspension

Double front suspension is another specificity of the X4 range. It absorbs terrain irregularities — bumps, potholes, transitions between lawn and a path — and keeps the double cutting disc in homogeneous contact with the ground. This is what allows obtaining a regular cut even on imperfect terrain.

EFLS 3.0 Navigation

Navigation relies on EFLS 3.0, which combines triple-frequency RTK, panoramic 360° VisionFence, and VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping).

Unlike the H2 models that exclusively use Network RTK without a local antenna, the X420 is delivered with a physical antenna to plant in the garden. Network RTK via 4G is available as a complement.

First Impressions

Unboxing the X420 is an experience. Even more so when alone for the task. Two people are recommended to carry the machine.

Box Contents

The box is large, the device is heavy, around 29 kg, and the kit content is complete: charging station with generous power cable, RTK antenna with its mounting posts and anchors, two sets of replacement blades, screws, and cable guides. Nothing is missing to start.

The protection garage is sold separately, an economy difficult to justify at this price.

Charging Station Installation

Installing the charging station requires more attention than on more compact models. It must be anchored on a perfectly flat surface — if it leans slightly, the robot may miss its connection when returning to charge.

RTK Antenna Setup

The RTK antenna installs quickly, ideally in a central and clear position, with electrical access nearby.

Mapping

Mapping is the step that really makes the difference between a good and a bad start. The automatic mode works well on well-defined terrains. On a 2,000 m² terrain with narrow passages, exclusion zones, or already tall grass, the manual mode is more reliable. Count about an hour for careful mapping.

Noise Level

What surprises from the first session is the quiet power of the X420. It advances with aplomb, without hesitation. But it is not as silent as the other Navimow models. At 65 dB, you hear it work. Not deafening, but perceptible at distance, and clearly not adapted to night mowing if your neighbours are close.

Performance

Movement and Terrain Management

The Xero-Turn AWD is the real revolution of the X420 facing previous generations. In turns, the front wheels pivot inwards thanks to their eccentric command, allowing a U-turn on a minimal radius. On dry terrain, not a trace, no tearing. On wet terrain, where a fixed-pivot robot leaves visible traces, the result remains clean.

Slope Performance

On slopes, the TCS traction control does its work: it adjusts the power wheel by wheel in real time to maintain trajectory, even on wet grass. No drift, no zigzag. The X420 climbs and descends in a straight line, which translates to parallel and regular mowing bands even on inclined sections.

The 84% slope announced is a theoretical value. For slopes from 30 to 50%, it shows no sign of weakness.

Obstacle Detection

The 360° VisionFence covers the entire perimeter of the robot with front and side cameras. Detection takes place up to 3 m for people, with progressive slowdown from 1 m. Classic obstacles — garden furniture, tools, balls, animals — are identified and bypassed without jerking.

However, despite "360°", the robot does not cover the rear. It happens that it backs into obstacles when manoeuvring in delicate passages.

Climbing Over Obstacles

Up to 7 cm in height, the X420 climbs over rather than bypasses: slightly raised terrace edges, flowerbed borders, forgotten watering hoses — it passes over without stopping. This is great, but also dangerous. Sensitive plants must be delimited in the application.

Detection Limits

The limits are the same as on other models in the range: very flat objects, thin or low-contrast on the ground pass under the radar.

Width Constraint

A point specific to the X420: its 61 cm width imposes passages of at least 100 cm to circulate easily between two zones.

Cutting Quality

With 43 cm useful width and two motors of 180 W, the X420 covers the terrain twice as fast as a single-disc model. The result on standard grass is uniform and clean. The MowMentum technology automatically adapts the rotation speed of the blades to the density of vegetation.

The cutting height adjusts electrically from the application, from 20 to 100 mm — a very wide range covering all seasons and all types of lawn.

Stripes and Edges

Beautiful parallel stripes are obtained, the angle of which is adjustable directly from the application — an aesthetic detail that makes all the difference on a large terrain. The borders are managed with precision thanks to the AI camera. EdgeSense ensures a finish at about 5 cm from the borders.

No Live Camera Feed

Do not expect to monitor mowing live from your sofa: the Navimow application does not offer live video feed.

Application

The Navimow application is identical to that of other models in the range. What changes for the X420 is the scale of what it must manage. Up to 120 independent zones, complex passages between zones, different cutting heights per zone, distinct schedules per parcel.

GeoSketch Map

The GeoSketch map allows you to adjust borders by finger on the satellite view, add exclusion zones, draw passages between zones, and modify the plan without re-mapping the whole.

Limitations

Some limitations persist. Schedule management on several zones and several charge cycles lacks flexibility. On a 2,000 m² terrain requiring three or four charge cycles for a complete mowing, total automation requires an investment in configuration. The 4G service moves to €29.90/year from the second year. The Network RTK is included for life.

On-Device Display

Note that the X420 has a bright on-board display, with careful readability even in full sun. You find essential information: battery level, connection status, current mowing mode, as well as basic commands.

Maintenance

The X420 is an outdoor device designed to last. The IP66 certification allows water jet cleaning without particular precaution.

Blade Replacement

The twelve pivoting blades give way in case of contact with a hard obstacle, which protects the discs and motors. Two replacement sets are provided in the box. On 2,000 m² in regular use, count one replacement every four to six weeks.

Off-Season Storage

Out of the mowing season, the battery must be stored away from frost, like any lithium-ion device.
