The Viltrox AF 85mm F1.4 Pro has plenty going for it, starting with careful ergonomics that include a manual aperture ring switchable between clicked and continuous operation, thoroughly respectable optical quality, capable autofocus and attractive bokeh. It is far from faultless, however. It is particularly heavy, it lacks consistency between the centre and the edges of the frame at the widest apertures, and it suffers from marked vignetting in those conditions. Even so, it remains capable of delivering very fine images and stands as an effective choice for portraiture.

Overview
The Viltrox AF 85mm F1.4 Pro is a prime lens intended for portraiture, offered in Sony E and Nikon Z mounts and covering the 24x36 mm full-frame format. It belongs to the Chinese optical manufacturer's Pro range and carries a high-end specification comparable with those of the native camera makers or third parties such as Sigma, which makes it a serious alternative to native and third-party rivals.
Viltrox runs two premium lines, LAB and Pro. The AF 85mm F1.4 Pro was the first model in the Pro series able to cover full frame. It was announced in March 2025, initially in Sony E, before being brought to Nikon Z in October of the same year. At the time of the review, the Pro range also included a full-frame 50mm F1.4 in the same two mounts, while the LAB line covered a 135mm F1.8 and a 35mm F1.2, again in Sony E or Nikon Z and again capable of covering the 24x36 mm format.
A high-end specification
This is an 85mm prime with a very bright maximum aperture of f/1.4, paired with a circular 11-blade diaphragm: a classic combination for portrait photographers.
The technical specification is resolutely upmarket, with a complex optical formula of 15 elements in 11 groups, including nine high-refractive-index elements, three ED glass elements and one high-precision aspherical element. Through the published MTF curves the manufacturer promises excellent optical performance with high and consistent sharpness.
Autofocus relies on a Viltrox dual HyperVCM drive that combines precision, speed and quiet operation for versatile use in stills and video alike. It is compatible with the subject-detection and tracking modes offered by Sony and Nikon. The minimum focus distance of 79 cm gives a maximum magnification of 0.13x.
Ergonomics
The AF 85mm F1.4 Pro presents itself well. The design is understated, the metal construction inspires confidence and the main ergonomic options are all present.
In the hand the lens is fairly imposing, dense and heavy. On the scales it comes in at 800 g, where the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is quoted at 642 g and the Sigma version at 625 g. That is a notable difference for intensive hand-held use.
In terms of size it measures around 11 cm long and 8.5 cm in diameter. It uses internal focusing, so its dimensions do not change in use. That is a good point, all the more so because it is protected against the elements by several seals, although there is no specific treatment on the front element.
The control set is generous. There is a manual aperture ring with an automatic position, graduated in one-third stops. That ring can be clicked for stills or switched to continuous operation for video. It is fairly rudimentary and noisy to operate in clicked mode, and a little too free-running in continuous mode. The manual focus ring, by contrast, is very pleasant to use: wide, with excellent damping that helps precision. Because it drives the autofocus motor directly, it has no hard end stops.
Elsewhere there is a switch for manual focus and a programmable button. Since the lens has no optical stabilisation there is no control devoted to it, but the base of the mount carries a USB-C socket for firmware updates.
Optical performance
The recorded laboratory measurements used a 61-megapixel full-frame body producing 9504 x 6336 pixel files. Testing was carried out on fine-quality JPEGs with the camera's lens compensation set to automatic, so digital corrections for vignetting, chromatic aberration and distortion were active. Sharpness was assessed with a dot chart and a blur-unit measurement derived from a low-frequency MTF analysis, which corresponds well to the way the eye perceives detail: the closer the value sits to zero, the sharper the result, with blur becoming perceptible around -1.5, visible around -2.5 and strong around -3.5.
Performance is satisfactory on several counts, starting with general sharpness, which is high overall and very high from f/2.8. Consistency from the centre to the extreme edges is perfect from f/4 and stays that way to f/16. The lens is at its best at f/5.6, while sharpness peaks at f/2.8, particularly at the centre. It does, however, suffer from a significant lack of consistency between the centre, along with the two-thirds field, and the extreme edges at the widest apertures. There is also a slight dip in sharpness between f/2.8 and f/4, although its visual impact is very small.
The comparison with the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is instructive, and the result is clear-cut: the G Master sits well above the Viltrox, with higher sharpness, far better consistency between the centre and the extreme edges at the widest apertures, and impeccable general behaviour.
Distortion and chromatic aberration
Primes of this type are rarely badly affected by distortion, and the camera applied digital corrections that are likely to be less thorough on a third-party lens than on a native optic. Measured distortion is low, of the order of 0.19%. Chromatic aberration, also corrected in camera, earns still more praise, measured at around 0.06%.
In practice
A short telephoto of 85mm is a staple for portrait photographers. With an angle of view of about 29 degrees it allows a subject to be framed relatively tightly while keeping some distance, which is often necessary for directing a model calmly. An 85mm also compresses perspective slightly and maximises bokeh through shallow depth of field.
Its applications are not restricted to portraiture. An 85mm can be a sensible choice for still life, food photography in particular, and for reportage.
The lens can be used on a Sony or Nikon mirrorless body with an APS-C sensor, in which case a 1.5x conversion factor applies, giving an equivalent focal length of 127.5mm.
Bokeh
Beyond focal length, portraiture often seeks pronounced bokeh and shallow depth of field. With its f/1.4 maximum aperture and 11-blade diaphragm, the AF 85mm F1.4 Pro is well suited to the exercise and slots easily into the category of bokeh specialists. The 11 blades produce properly circular background blur and gentle transitions between blurred and sharp areas. Faced with point light sources photographed at small apertures, the starburst effect is made up of 22 points.
Vignetting, focusing and stabilisation
There is plenty of vignetting to deal with. Very present and clearly visible at the widest aperture of f/1.4, it requires stopping down to f/4 to disappear completely, despite the camera's digital correction. It is easy to remove in post-processing, and for some purposes it can even be regarded as an asset that closes the frame and guides the viewer's eye towards the centre.
Unsurprisingly, the lens has no optical stabilisation, as is the case on the vast majority of primes of this type whatever the brand or mount. Hand-held shutter speeds therefore depend on in-body stabilisation and on the f/1.4 aperture.
Viltrox has fitted its high-end HyperVCM autofocus drive, which is fast, precise and quiet, and it lives up to the demands of the subject-tracking modes on Sony and Nikon bodies. Users of Sony cameras will be limited on the fastest burst rates with AF tracking, capped at 15 frames per second. Minimum focus distance is 79 cm for a maximum magnification of 0.13x, so this is not a lens suited to close-up work.
Where it stands
The closest alternatives include Sony's FE 85mm F1.4 GM II, Sigma's 85mm option, the Sirui 85mm F1.4 FF from the Aurora range and the Samyang 85mm F1.4 FE II. The measured evidence keeps the Viltrox below the Sony for wide-open edge consistency, while its own strengths remain the control layout, capable autofocus and smooth bokeh.
