Our Verdict
With the iPhone 17e, Apple offers an entry-level model in the current iPhone 17 generation. It convinces with solid technology and the A19 processor, but makes compromises on the 60 Hz display, single camera, and charging speed. At 700 euros, even the cheap iPhone is not cheap.

Apple iPhone 17e: The Cheapest Entry Into the iPhone 17 Series
Verdict (13 March 2026)
With the iPhone 17e, Apple offers an entry-level model in the current iPhone generation. In testing, it convinces with solid technology but also makes a number of compromises. On the positive side, the A19 processor delivers excellent performance — including for the local but still not particularly impressive AI functions of "Apple Intelligence". In the battery test the iPhone shows everyday-suitable endurance, but it could charge faster. Build quality is at a high level, and the compact construction is also pleasing. At 6.1 inches, the display offers high sharpness and beautiful colours, but the refresh rate remains at 60 Hertz and an always-on mode is missing. On the back, only a single camera is used — but it takes very attractive photos. Further equipment includes MagSafe, IP68 protection against water and dust, convincing stereo speakers, and modern connectivity with 5G and dual eSIM. At test time, even the entry-level iPhone still costs around 700 euros.

About the iPhone 17e
The iPhone 17e delivers relatively affordable Apple technology, but falls behind expectations for its price class.
Compact Dimensions
At 147 x 72 mm, it is the smallest iPhone in the 17 series. With the matt plastic back and the rounded metal frame, it sits excellently in the hand.
The Notch Returns
Returning once again: the familiar "notch", which covers quite a lot of the front.
MagSafe in the Budget Model
The magnetic MagSafe back appears for the first time in the budget model.
Daylight Photography
The 48 MP rear camera takes very attractive, detail-rich photos in daylight.
Zoom Limitations
There is no telephoto lens; zoom is purely digital. Beyond two-times magnification, it quickly becomes coarse-grained.
Low-Light Performance
In poor lighting conditions, photos are sometimes quite noisy. A test image of an artificial head was captured under low-light conditions at F/1.6, 1/40 sec., ISO-320.
Portrait Mode
Thanks to the new portrait mode, photos can now also be retroactively converted into portraits on the iPhone 17e.
Same Quality as the Standard Model
Through its near-identical main camera, the iPhone 17e takes photos at the level of the standard iPhone 17.

Apple iPhone 17e: Small Refinements and Clear Compromises
With the iPhone 17e, Apple gives its mid-range a solid upgrade. Under the hood, much has changed; externally the device remains unchanged from its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. So it once again uses the familiar "notch", which covers more of the display than the "Dynamic Island" of its more expensive siblings. However, it is not really disturbing. The new "Ceramic Shield 2" display glass is said to offer better scratch resistance. In testing, it was also noticeable that it has better anti-reflection properties than its predecessor.
With a screen diagonal of 6.1 inches, the iPhone 17e now qualifies as a compact smartphone. A pleasant weight of 167 grams and the rounded metal frame make it the familiar high-quality hand-flatterer. The somewhat thicker display bezels are noticeable at first, but you quickly get used to them.
Beautiful OLED Display With 60 Hertz
Despite a starting price of around 700 euros, Apple does without "ProMotion" technology in the display. This means: motion takes place at only 60 instead of 120 Hertz and therefore appears less smooth and sharp. In addition, support for "Always On" is missing. As a result, the time and widgets cannot be displayed while the iPhone is in standby. These are two screen functions that today should actually be standard even at half the price — but many users may hardly miss them in everyday life.
The OLED display can score with its sharpness: it resolves at a crisp 2,532 x 1,170 pixels, with a pixel density of 459 ppi ("pixels per inch"). The rich colours and clear contrasts are also pleasing. With maximum brightness values of 1,054 cd/m² ("nits"), the brightness is not on a par with top smartphones, but it is sufficient for outdoor use.
Strong Performance and Battery Life
Apple equips its entry-level iPhone with the current A19 processor, which is also used in the iPhone 17. However, the e-model saves one graphics core, which means that the benchmark values in testing are slightly lower than with the standard 17. Nevertheless, the 17e offers strong performance at upper-class level. The interface speed in iOS and during everyday tasks is high, current 3D games run smoothly. There is also 8 GB of RAM available, which means multitasking is also no problem.
Battery Endurance
The 4,005 mAh battery, in combination with Apple's energy-efficient processor, ensures a strong runtime of over 17.5 hours (on LTE network).
Charging Speed
Charging the completely empty phone takes a total of 1 hour 42 minutes — competitors do this faster. After half an hour on the cable, however, the battery is already 61 percent charged.
Wireless Charging
New: even the "cheap" iPhone now offers the magnetic Qi-2 standard for wireless charging and is compatible with Apple's MagSafe accessories.
Good Single Camera
The single rear camera resolves at up to 48 megapixels and shoots at 24.5 MP by default. In daylight, this produces extremely beautiful photos with plenty of detail and natural colours. Good results are also achieved in poor lighting conditions, although a fairly strong image noise was noticeable on dark subjects.
Zoom and Ultrawide
Due to the absence of a telephoto lens, zoom is purely digital and quickly produces blurred pixel mush at higher magnification levels. An ultrawide mode is also missing.
Video Recording
The phone records video in 4K resolution at smooth 60 frames per second.
Front Camera
In the notch, the iPhone still houses a 12-megapixel front camera, which is suitable for very attractive selfies. Compared to the more expensive models, Apple does without a dedicated camera button.
Modern Equipment
On the software side, thanks to iOS, the same experience is available as on the upper-class models. The AI functions around "Apple Intelligence" are also supported and are calculated partly locally on the hardware. Compared to the Gemini offering on Android, however, the results are mostly rather sobering. For example, the "Clean Up" function for removing objects from images in the Photos app is not on a par with Google's "Magic Eraser". As is typical for Apple, there is long update support, at least until 2032.
Audio
The rest of the equipment is very solid: two speakers, one on the underside and the other integrated into the earpiece, produce good stereo sound.
Connectivity
A nano-SIM slot is on board, and two eSIMs can also be used with current 5G connectivity. With Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, fairly current wireless standards are on board.
Ports and Accessories
The iPhone 17e also comes again with a USB-C 2.0 port. A high-quality fabric-sheathed cable is included in the package; a power supply is not.
Storage Upgrade
It is pleasing that Apple has doubled the entry-level storage to 256 GB — despite the same RRP as its predecessor. A 128 GB variant no longer exists.
How Smartphones Are Tested
The independent test centre evaluates smartphones across the categories of equipment, operation, and battery. The test winner of a category sets the best score with a school grade of 1.0; all others adapt to it. Battery life is measured in a worst-case scenario where a test page including embedded video is refreshed every three minutes via the LTE network of Deutsche Telekom. The display brightness is set to 200 cd/m² for the measurement. The display refresh rate is set to 60 Hz for comparability.
Comparison Notes From the Test Field
In a wider comparison drawing on 252 tested smartphones, the iPhone 17e is positioned alongside its predecessor (iPhone 16e), the test winner (Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra), the value pick (Xiaomi Poco F7), and the best alternatives (Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Vivo X300 Pro), as well as the best iPhone (iPhone 17 Pro Max).
Design Heritage
With the design echoing the iPhone 14, Apple finally departs from the home button still found on the previous iPhone SE. The matt, single-coloured glass on the back is particularly robust and high-quality, with an aluminium frame.
The Notch in Practice
The large notch was characteristic of the iPhone for a long time, until the "Dynamic Island" replaced it on the iPhone 15 series in all four phones. With full-screen videos, the large notch is particularly in the way. However, in everyday use it is not actually too disturbing and offers space for secure infrared face recognition.
Action Button
The ringtone switch remains a relic of the past. Instead, Apple uses the so-called "Action Button" on the iPhone 16e and beyond. The Action Button can be assigned various functions or shortcuts in the settings — or it can simply be set to mute mode.
USB-C Standard
USB-C replaces "Lightning" even in the budget iPhone. The 2.0 standard transfers data somewhat slower than the Pro models. Alongside USB-C, the iPhone can also be charged wirelessly on Qi-compatible surfaces. On the iPhone 17e, MagSafe is now on board for the first time in the e-model.
Display Brightness in Practice
The maximum display brightness of around 1,120 cd/m² in the boost mode triggered by direct sunlight is not outstandingly high, but everyday-suitable.
Single Camera in Context
Apple is one of the last phone manufacturers still using a single camera. As a result, an ultrawide mode is missing and the zoom also leaves something to be desired. Only in the range between one and ten can you zoom in when photographing. At least the standard shots look very good.
48 Megapixel Quality
The 48-megapixel single camera takes great photos in standard mode with clear details and beautiful colours.
Two-Times Optical Zoom
Due to the missing telephoto, the iPhone only allows a two-times "optical" zoom by cropping the 24-megapixel image to 12 megapixels. The two-times zoom puts in a very good showing in testing. While not quite at high-end level, it can convince in everyday use.
Cannot Zoom Out
By forgoing the ultrawide lens of the standard iPhone, you cannot zoom out on the e-model — very unusual for the price class.
Comparison to Other iPhones
In direct comparison, the iPhone 16e and the iPhone 16 take nearly identical photos. Colours, details and contrasts look great. Even from the high-end flagship, the simple photos are not far behind. The maximum is still found in the Pro model, however.
