JBL Xtreme 4 Review

The JBL Xtreme 4 is JBL's big, rugged portable speaker, sitting above the Charge and Flip in the range and priced at around £300. It is built for the outdoors: a burly IP67-rated body with a shoulder strap, a huge battery, an integrated power bank to charge your phone and — unusually — a swappable battery you can replace to extend its life. Independent laboratory testing rates it very good for outdoor use, with a couple of predictable trade-offs for a speaker this size.

The Xtreme 4 delivers the punchy, bass-forward sound JBL is known for, boosted by the brand's AI Sound Boost processing that pushes the drivers harder without distortion. The test found it gets loud enough to soundtrack a small outdoor gathering, though the bass range tends to compress as you approach maximum volume, so it is happiest a notch below full tilt. There is a graphic equaliser and presets in the JBL app if you want to reshape the balance. The one sonic caveat the test flagged is directivity: it does not sound consistent from every angle, so it pays to think about where you point it.

This is where the Xtreme 4 earns its name. The test praised its rugged, portable design with a carrying strap, and its IP67 rating means it is fully dustproof and waterproof — it will shrug off a freak downpour or a dusty festival field without a second thought. Battery life is a standout: the test measured 27 hours on a charge, easily covering a weekend away or a full day at the beach between top-ups. It is not as grab-and-go as JBL's tiny Clip, but it slips into a camping backpack or weekend bag readily enough.

Two features set the Xtreme 4 apart. First, its battery doubles as a power bank via a USB port, so you can top up a phone from it in a pinch — genuinely useful on a long day out. Second, and more unusually, the battery is user-swappable: you can replace it if it wears out after years of use, extending the speaker's lifespan rather than binning the whole unit. It also supports JBL's Auracast, letting you pair it with other compatible JBL speakers for a bigger, louder setup.

The compromises are the honest ones for a large portable. The test noted the bass compression near maximum volume and the mediocre directivity, both of which ask you to be a little thoughtful about placement and how hard you push it. Neither undermines its core appeal as a tough, loud, long-lasting outdoor speaker.

The JBL Xtreme 4 is a superb outdoor speaker: tough, waterproof, seriously loud and blessed with a 27-hour battery, a handy built-in power bank and a swappable cell that should keep it going for years. The bass softens a touch when you crank it and it does not sound identical from every angle, but for a rugged, take-anywhere speaker to soundtrack the garden, the beach or a camping trip, it is one of the best big portables you can buy.
