Design and New Features of the Oppo Find X8 Pro

Recent smartphone design trends of 2024 have emphasised flatter frames and screens reminiscent of iPhones. Oppo, however, keeps a lightly curved display for the Find X8 Pro (though edges have been somewhat flattened compared to the X5 Pro). The white, satin-finished back (tested here) exudes a sleek aesthetic, combining high-grade glass and metal. Gone is the distinctive ceramic camera module from the X5 Pro, replaced by a more typical circular housing—still elegant, though less unique.

A Dedicated Camera Button and Alert Slider

Two standout physical additions are:
  1. Alert Slider: A three-position toggle (silent, vibrate, ring) on the left side, borrowed from OnePlus.
  2. Camera Shutter Button: A flush button on the frame that quickly launches the camera with a double press. Within the camera app, it doubles as a shutter and allows swipe-based zooming.

Our Thoughts on ColorOS

Oppo’s relaunch in France also means the return of ColorOS, its Android overlay. Over the past two years, it has grown indistinguishable from OnePlus’s OxygenOS—arguably an improvement.Fluid and intuitive, ColorOS is easy to navigate and promises five years of OS updates (less than Google and Samsung’s seven years, but still good). It leans heavily on Google’s suite for core apps. The phone also includes handy AI tools (like Magic Eraser-style features, note summarisation, and voice transcription) and a “remove reflections” function for photos, albeit with mixed success.

“Dynamic” Notifications

Mirroring Apple’s Dynamic Island, Oppo has introduced small pop-up alerts around the display’s hole-punch for timer or torch use. It’s not essential but is a neat trick.

Touch to Share

Via NFC, “Touch to Share” allows file transfers with iOS/iPadOS 15 devices—though your contact must install a specific Oppo app and grant multiple permissions, limiting its convenience.

Performance: Debuting the Dimensity 9400

Powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage, the Oppo Find X8 Pro sits among the top flagships. Benchmarks confirm it outperforms older high-end SoCs, though not quite matching the Snapdragon 8 Elite in the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro.In actual use, it breezes through heavy tasks and games like Genshin Impact, maintaining near-60 fps with minimal throttling. Overall, expect top-notch speed and responsive multitasking.

Photo Quality: A Comprehensive Toolkit

Equipped with four 50MP sensors—wide-angle, ultra-wide, 3x telephoto, and 6x telephoto—the Oppo Find X8 Pro aims to rival premium phones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Its real-world performance is highly versatile, spaing zoom ratios from 0.6x to 120x. The phone quickly processes shots, and the final image closely matches the on-screen preview.Colour bias tends to be warm and occasionally over-processed, similar to how Google Pixel intensifies micro-contrast. Details can appear slightly smoothed on close inspection. Meanwhile, night mode is decent but prone to occasional blur or painterly effects.Still, the camera excels in day-to-day photography, and the phone’s broad lens selection and advanced features deliver a compelling photo experience.

Display: Excellent Calibration and High Brightness

The 6.78-inch OLED display at 2780 × 1264 resolution offers:
  • Infinite contrast
  • Superb colour accuracy (delta E ~1.89 in sRGB, ~2.97 in DCI-P3)
  • Impressive brightness (averaging 821 nits, peaking at 1228 nits, with HDR spikes around 1712 nits)
While some rivals may claim higher absolute nits in direct sunlight, the X8 Pro’s display remains vibrant and crisp, on par with the best Samsung panels.

Battery Life: A True Workhorse

Oppo uses a Silicon-Carbon battery to cram 5910mAh capacity into the Find X8 Pro. Day-to-day endurance is excellent; starting at 100% in the morning typically leaves around 50% by evening under moderate use.

Charging

No charger is included. Using a 65W third-party charger, we reached 24% in 10 minutes, fully charging in about 1 hour 17 minutes. Oppo sells an 80W adapter and a 50W wireless charger separately for those seeking faster or wireless options.

Price and Availability

AA single variant (16 GB RAM / 512 GB storage) retails for ~£1199/€1199, with pre-orders ruing until 12 December. Early buyers get up to €150 cashback plus an accessory pack (protective case, 80W charger, 50W wireless charger).

Oppo Find X8 Pro: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Great value for money
  • Top-tier camera flexibility
  • Bright, colour-accurate display
  • Excellent battery life
  • High-end performance

Cons

  • No in-box charger
  • Gorilla Glass 7i protectio
  • “Only” five years of OS updates

Final Verdict: Oppo Find X8 Pro

As Oppo re-enters the premium category, the Find X8 Pro stands toe to toe with the Galaxy S24 Ultra yet launches at a lower price for a similarly equipped 512 GB model. Its photography skills impress: four 50MP lenses, warm colour processing, and quick post-shot rendering. Battery life is stellar, performance is reliably fast, and the display boasts top calibration and brightness. Five years of updates is solid, though behind Google or Samsung’s seven-year offers, and omitting the charger can be inconvenient.Nevertheless, if those minor trade-offs don’t bother you, the Oppo Find X8 Pro ranks among the top Android smartphones available.

Samsung Galaxy A37 Review (): A Discreet Evolution at a Higher Price
3.8/5
Mobile Phones

The Samsung Galaxy A37 keeps the Exynos 1480 processor from the 2024 A55 while adding a brighter 6.7-inch AMOLED display reaching 1,923 nits in HDR, IP68 certification, and six years of Android updates. Samsung’s AI features filter down to the mid-range, but the price increase and lack of a true telephoto zoom hold it back against Nothing Phone 4a and Pixel 10a.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G launches at €199 with a 6,000 mAh battery, a curved 6.77-inch AMOLED 120 Hz display, and a 108 MP main camera. The MediaTek Helio G100 Ultra processor is modest, and it loses 5G and the ultrawide camera, but at this price it has no real competition.

The Motorola Edge 70 Fusion combines a slim, elegant design with a fabric back, a sharp 6.78-inch OLED display, and 19.5 hours of battery life. Rated Good (1.7) and ranked 80 of 252. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 handles everyday use, but the camera lacks an optical telephoto.
