Samsung's QD-OLED sets have headed its television line-up for several years, even while the company pushes Mini-LED, and now RGB Mini-LED, as the premium alternative to OLED. For 2026 the outgoing flagship gains two successors rather than one: the conventional S95H, and the S99H, which keeps essentially the same technical specification but dresses it in a decorative design intended to be hung on a wall like a canvas.
The recorded test covered the 55-inch TQ55S99H. The range also runs to 65, 77 and 83 inches, and the largest of those switches to a W-OLED panel instead of QD-OLED, so different behaviour should be expected there on Rec.2020 coverage, viewing angles and possibly peak brightness.
All brightness and colorimetry figures quoted below were taken during that test by a certified calibrator using a spectroradiometer, a reference colorimeter and professional calibration software.
Design, connections and everyday use
The design is what separates the S99H most clearly from its rivals. Samsung has fitted an integrated metal frame so the panel looks as though it has been placed on top of the surround rather than sunk into it. The result is genuinely distinctive but also divisive, and unlike the company's dedicated art television the frame cannot be swapped, at least for now.
The set is clearly built for wall mounting, and that is where it makes the most sense, helped by an art mode that displays paintings or personal photographs when the television is idle. Full access to the museum catalogue sits behind a paid subscription. Basic side feet are supplied for anyone who would rather stand it on a unit.
One omission stands out: the wireless One Connect box is an optional extra. On a television designed to hang on a wall, that breakout box would have been far better included as standard, because without it the installation is visibly less tidy, especially once several sources are connected.
Connectivity covers four HDMI ports, all of them HDMI 2.1, two USB ports, Ethernet, an optical output, a CI+ card slot and the usual aerial and satellite inputs, plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The set runs Tizen OS, which remains comprehensive and well organised, with a settings menu laid out much like a smartphone's, although some waits are long — plugging in an HDMI device in particular. A Samsung account is still needed to use the connected services fully.
The solar remote returns: compact, practical and rechargeable over USB-C or from ambient light. It has no backlight, and there is no dedicated source button, so changing input means going back to the home screen — a real irritation day to day.
Picture quality in SDR
The QD-OLED panel keeps OLED's perfect blacks while quantum dots improve colour saturation. Filmmaker mode was used for the measurements as the most faithful preset.
Contrast is, unsurprisingly, excellent. Every pixel switches off individually, so blacks are perfect, with no grey veil, no light leakage and no halo around bright objects. The best Mini-LED sets have improved a great deal but still cannot match that.
SDR colorimetry proved good rather than flawless. The average delta E measured 2.9, just above the threshold of 2 at which drift starts to be visible to the naked eye, so the image looks broadly natural without being the most precise calibration around. Average gamma of 2.4 lines up exactly with the expected value, and greyscale tracking is sound, with dark scenes readable and a well-balanced picture, although highlights come out a little too dark. Average colour temperature measured 6084 K, slightly warm against the 6500 K reference; a more neutral white would have been preferable, though the shortfall is not serious.
Peak SDR brightness reached 430 cd/m², a good figure for an OLED and close to other recent Samsung models. Mini-LED sets keep more headroom in a very bright room, but the anti-reflective treatment described below makes up much of that difference in practice. Viewing angles are outstanding, with the loss limited to 16% at 45 degrees — an area where QD-OLED retains a clear advantage over LCD, Mini-LED included.
HDR: the brightest OLED around
Samsung still leaves out Dolby Vision, which remains a shame on a set at this level. HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG are all supported, and HDR10+ is now carried by every major streaming platform, but the absence of Dolby's dynamic format will matter to some buyers.
EOTF tracking was satisfactory rather than perfect, with highlights looking slightly underexposed, echoing the SDR gamma result. The HDR presentation is nonetheless spectacular, because peak brightness is one of the S99H's headline strengths: 2900 cd/m² on a 10% window, 2850 cd/m² on 2% and 500 cd/m² full screen. For an OLED those are enormous numbers, and the 10% figure beats the closest rival OLED, which tops out at 2400 cd/m², even though that competitor stays ahead on very small bright areas at 3200 cd/m². The brightest Mini-LED RGB sets have since pushed past 4300 cd/m², but very little content in 2026 is mastered that high.
HDR colorimetry is very well controlled, with an average delta E of just 1.8. Colour coverage confirms the value of QD-OLED, at 100% of DCI-P3 and 89.1% of Rec.2020, although the newest RGB Mini-LED panels now reach around 95% of Rec.2020.
Reflections, black level and banding
Samsung's anti-reflective filters have been formidable for several generations and the S99H continues that run: reflectance measured just 6%, the best result recorded for reflection handling. In a bright living room the advantage is obvious. The nearest premium OLED rival has improved this year but still measures 17%, though its glossy panel keeps deeper blacks in full light. Weaker sets sit above 25%, and entry-level models can reach 40%.
That filter has one side effect. In a dark room the blacks are perfect, but in daylight or under ceiling lights the anti-reflective layer raises black level slightly, so dark areas look veiled.
OLED avoids clouding and blooming entirely: white subtitles on black, starfields and isolated bright objects produce no halo. Banding, however, was visible in some difficult scenes, particularly on colour gradients. That is disappointing at this level, especially as the closest rival has improved on exactly this point with its newer video processing. The fault will only show in certain scenes, but it deserves flagging.
Gaming and sound
Gamers are well served. The panel runs at 165 Hz, which mainly benefits PC players since current consoles remain capped at 120 Hz, and VRR, ALLM and the usual game bar functions are all present. Input lag was excellent at 9.4 ms in 1080p at 60 Hz and only 4.9 ms in 1080p at 120 Hz, so there is no perceptible delay between a controller input and the screen. OLED's near-zero response time buries LCD here. Game mode colorimetry is also accurate, with delta E of 1.8 in both SDR and HDR, provided the Original profile is selected in the game bar. Four HDMI 2.1 ports mean several consoles, a PC and an eARC soundbar can all stay connected.
The built-in audio is satisfying, reaching reasonably low in the bass and clearly outperforming less ambitious sets, though the low end lacks impact. Spatialisation barely extends beyond the width of the screen, an area where the best-sounding rival is considerably better. A soundbar remains advisable for films and series.
Durability and running costs
The durability assessment recorded for this set was strong overall. Its weakest element was the stated length of time replacement parts would remain available.
Power consumption is less flattering. Average draw measured 74.3 W on the standard SDR test pattern, a relative figure of 89.1 W/m², which is a poor result; QD-OLED appears to draw more than the latest W-OLED panels. Over a two-hour HDR film the set consumed 0.149 kWh, which is well below most Mini-LED models.
How it compares
Against the top LG OLED, the S99H holds the advantage on reflection handling, Rec.2020 coverage and 10% window peak brightness, while the LG keeps Dolby Vision, better black handling in a bright living room and lower energy use. Compared with current Mini-LED and RGB Mini-LED sets it is the stronger television overall: not as bright, but free of their contrast, blooming and viewing-angle compromises. The premium RGB Mini-LED alternative remains convincing thanks to unprecedented peak brightness, an effective anti-reflective filter and a better sound system. For anyone whose priority is a set that lives on a wall, the S99H is one of the most complete choices of the year.
