Price and positioning

The gap starts with money. The iPhone 17 begins at around £799 for 256GB, while the iPhone 17 Pro starts at roughly £1,099 for the same storage — a £300 premium before you reach the larger-capacity or Pro Max options. That framing matters: the base iPhone 17 is pitched as the phone for almost everyone, and the Pro as the enthusiast's choice for those who specifically want its camera and performance headroom.

Design and handling

This is a genuine split. The standard iPhone 17 is the lighter, slimmer, more pocketable phone, and the test praised how comfortable it is to hold over long sessions. The iPhone 17 Pro deliberately goes the other way: it is heavier at 206g and thicker at 8.75mm, with a new full-width camera shelf across the back. The test found that shelf makes the Pro more stable when laid flat and gives the fingers a natural resting edge, and that its rounded sides keep the bigger phone easy to hold — but it is unmistakably the chunkier device, sold in a bold Cosmic Orange. One note of caution: the Pro's launch was dogged by a durability question, nicknamed "Scratchgate", over how easily its anodised finish marks, which the test is still monitoring over the long term.

Display: near-identical, both excellent

There is very little to choose here, which is a win for the cheaper phone. The test measured both screens at around 3,000 cd/m² peak brightness and singled out their calibration as exceptional — the standard iPhone 17 recorded near-perfect sRGB colour accuracy, and the Pro's panel was judged a reference on the market. Both now run at a smooth 120Hz. If the display is your priority, you do not need to spend up for the Pro.

Cameras: the one big difference

If there is a single reason to choose the Pro, it is here. Both phones carry excellent 48-megapixel main and ultra-wide cameras, and the standard iPhone 17 impressed the test with natural, sharp shots and strong low-light performance. But the iPhone 17 lacks a dedicated telephoto — the test flagged its absence as the phone's one real weakness, leaving zoomed shots to a crop of the main sensor. The iPhone 17 Pro adds exactly what the base model misses: a new 4x telephoto with a 48MP sensor that reaches a "lossless" 8x by cropping into that sensor. The test found the difference in sharpness between 4x optical and 8x cropped imperceptible, rated the Pro the best iPhone yet for photography, and judged it better than the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL at separating a subject from its background. For anyone who zooms, that telephoto alone can justify the Pro.

Performance and battery

Both phones are fast, but the Pro has more in reserve. The standard iPhone 17 uses Apple's A19 processor and never feels short of pace; the 17 Pro steps up to the A19 Pro, which the test rated among the fastest silicon around, with more headroom for demanding, sustained workloads. The Pro also pulls ahead on stamina: the test recorded a real improvement in battery life over the previous generation, addressing a long-standing Pro-line gripe. The standard iPhone 17's battery is good rather than class-leading, so heavy users who want the longest runtime will lean Pro.

Which should you buy?

For most people, the standard iPhone 17 is the smarter buy. You get the same outstanding, superbly calibrated screen, the same excellent main and ultra-wide cameras, Apple's latest processor and a lighter body — for £300 less. The iPhone 17 Pro earns its premium in three specific areas: the 4x telephoto for real zoom, the extra performance of the A19 Pro, and longer battery life. If you photograph at distance, push your phone hard, or simply want the most complete iPhone regardless of price, the Pro is the one. If you do not, the money is better kept in your pocket.

Verdict

The standard iPhone 17 is the value champion and the right call for the majority: it removes almost every old reason to trade up, bar the missing telephoto.
