Logitech MX Master 4 Review: The Productivity Queen Refined

The Logitech MX Master series has long reigned supreme in the productivity mouse market, favoured by developers, creatives, and professionals who demand exceptional performance throughout their working day. The arrival of the MX Master 4 continues this tradition with what Logitech describes as a "remasterisation"—a thoughtful evolution that preserves the excellent foundations whilst addressing previous weaknesses and introducing carefully considered enhancements.

The key improvements include haptic feedback for tactile confirmation of actions, a complete materials overhaul to eliminate the sticky rubber coating issues of previous generations, and the innovative Actions Ring feature designed to boost productivity. But does this refinement justify the £110 price tag and maintain the MX Master's dominance against increasingly fierce competition?

At first glance, the MX Master 4 remains unmistakably an MX Master. The sculpted, ergonomic form designed specifically for right-handers promises comfort even after extended use. The mouse has gained a modest 9 grams (150g versus 141g for the 3S), attributable to the new haptic motor, but this difference is imperceptible in daily use.

The most significant and welcome change concerns the materials. Gone is the rubber coating from the MX Master 3S that had an unfortunate tendency to become sticky and age poorly—a genuine nightmare for many users. Logitech now employs hard textured plastic for the body complemented by silicone sides. This is excellent news for durability and cleaning, with the mouse resisting stains far better and promising to remain pristine for considerably longer.

However, this solution isn't without compromise. In addressing one issue, Logitech has created another, albeit a more subjective one. This new coating is more slippery than the previous rubber and may require a brief adaptation period for enthusiasts of the series. The enhanced durability and ease of maintenance represent a sensible trade-off for most users.

Haptic Feedback: A First for the MX Range

The headline innovation for this mouse is the introduction of haptic feedback. A small vibration motor housed in the thumb rest delivers subtle vibrations to confirm certain actions: mode changes for scrolling, switching between computers with the Flow function, or low battery alerts. The concept is appealing, and integration with applications such as Photoshop or Premiere Pro shows promise, with vibrations signalling perfect layer alignment or completed exports.

Presently, native haptic support is limited to a handful of applications and requires Logi Options+. Logitech provides the necessary tools for other developers to add support, but broader adoption will likely require time.

Actions Ring: The Ultimate Shortcut?

The other major software innovation is the Actions Ring. A new button beneath the thumb summons a circular menu of customisable shortcuts around the cursor. The objective is to minimise extensive mouse movements, particularly on large displays, by providing instant access to a menu. This comprises eight configurable elements allowing simple actions, task launches, or function shortcuts.

Positively, as is typical with Logitech, everything is customisable through the Options+ software. Due to the extensive range of options, finding the ideal configuration may require some time, but the wealth of possibilities is appreciated. Moreover, Logitech isn't limited to basic or Windows-integrated actions and offers an extensions store. Although the Actions Ring is relatively new, popular tools ranging from the Adobe suite to Spotify and Apple Music are already available.

The minor teething problem is that haptic support currently depends on Options+ and is confined to selected applications. Logitech supplies the necessary resources to other developers for integration, but widespread adoption will probably take time.

Regarding performance, the MX Master 4 retains the Darkfield 8K DPI sensor from the 3S, which remains excellent and capable of functioning on any surface, including glass. The scroll wheels remain the market benchmark. The main MagSpeed wheel, transitioning from notched to free scrolling, is a silent and precise delight. The thumb wheel has been marginally improved for enhanced control.

The renowned "Quiet Clicks" return, now even more discreet than the 3S. This silence is a genuine asset in shared office environments, though it can be initially disconcerting. The tactile feedback is so subtle that one might question whether the click registered before quickly adapting. A minor inconvenience from other mice that one rapidly becomes accustomed to the MX Master 4's comfort and silence.

However, the genuine shortcoming—the persistent flaw—is the polling rate locked at 125 Hz. On a standard 60 Hz screen, this is manageable. But on modern monitors at 120 Hz or 144 Hz, cursor movement can appear jerky. This is a deliberate choice by Logitech to preserve battery life (consistently excellent at 70 days advertised), but in 2025, on a mouse at this price point, this is scarcely excusable.

Concerning connectivity, Logitech promises a wireless connection "twice as powerful" courtesy of a new chip and improved antenna positioning. The mouse communicates via Bluetooth Low Energy or through the Logi Bolt receiver. A welcome novelty, this receiver now features a USB-C format, far more convenient for modern laptops.

Battery life remains a major strength, with an advertised duration of 70 days on a full charge. We were unable to test the MX Master 4 to its limits after a month of use, but we're approaching 50%, and the promise appears realistic. It's pleasing that integrating a novelty such as haptic feedback doesn't compromise endurance.

Additionally, fast charging is available: a single minute connected via USB-C suffices to recover three hours of use. Conversely, in a move towards reducing accessories, Logitech has made a choice that may irritate some: the USB-C charging cable is no longer included in the box.

The other major strength of the MX Master 4 is its software, Logi Options+. This allows complete customisation, creation of application-specific profiles, task automation with "Smart Actions," or control of multiple computers with "Logi Flow."

However, this power conceals a weakness in the mouse—the complete absence of onboard memory. All your customisations are stored on the computer, not in the mouse. This can be problematic if you use the mouse on a work computer where you cannot install software. In this specific case, it reverts to a basic mouse.

It improves upon an already excellent formula by correcting the major durability flaw of its predecessor, whilst adding thoughtfully conceived software features such as the Actions Ring. Its ergonomics remain exemplary, its scroll wheels are a pure pleasure to use, and its battery life remains impressively robust.

The 125 Hz polling rate and absence of onboard memory are the only notable technical limitations. Yet, for the vast majority of professionals, this remains a winning gamble that maintains it securely on its throne.

Rather than a revolution, Logitech has made a clear choice: prioritising comfort and battery life over raw technical performance. For the overwhelming majority of professionals, this is a winning wager.
