The Canon RF 35mm F1.4L VCM is a high-end professional optic that delivers excellent image quality and remarkable versatility in the field. The 35mm focal length opens up landscape and portrait work alongside reportage, and the F1.4 maximum aperture is ideal for playing with depth of field and shooting comfortably in low light. It is built for photographers and videographers together, with a manual aperture ring dedicated entirely to the latter, and it sits squarely in line with the rest of Canon's L VCM F1.4 primes. The reservations are the uneven extreme edges and visible vignetting at the widest apertures, and the absence of optical stabilisation.

Overview

The Canon RF 35mm F1.4L VCM was announced in June 2024 as a hybrid prime built for stills and video alike. It uses the RF mount and covers the full 24x36 mm frame, so it is compatible with Canon's full-frame and APS-C mirrorless bodies. Mounted on an APS-C camera, Canon's 1.6x crop factor gives it a field of view equivalent to roughly 56 mm, which turns it into a longer standard lens more suited to portraiture.

Part of the F1.4 L VCM family

Being an L-series optic, this is a professional lens that gathers Canon's best work in construction, ergonomics and specification. Canon designed these primes as a coherent family: the same maximum aperture, the same hybrid stills-and-video philosophy and the same autofocus motor arrangement across the range. At the time of writing, that family also included the RF 14mm F1.4L VCM, RF 20mm F1.4L VCM, RF 24mm F1.4L VCM, RF 50mm F1.4L VCM and RF 85mm F1.4L VCM.

Thirty-five millimetres is a fairly wide standard focal length, used most often for reportage and, in some cases, for landscape and portrait work. Here it is paired with a very large F1.4 maximum aperture and an 11-blade circular diaphragm, a combination intended to produce pronounced bokeh at shallow depths of field. That aperture also makes it easier to work handheld in poor light, leaning on the camera body's in-body sensor stabilisation.

Optical design

Optically, the lens uses a formula of 14 elements in 11 groups, including aspherical elements and low-dispersion UD glass, with Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coating treatments applied. Canon states that the result is images free of flare, veiling glare and ghosting.

Autofocus and close focusing

The autofocus system is unusually complex. A Nano USM motor drives a floating element, while a powerful VCM (Voice Coil Motor) shifts the larger elements quickly and quietly. Focusing is internal, so the lens does not change length in use, and focus breathing has been kept to a minimum, which matters to videographers pulling focus between subjects. Minimum focusing distance is 28 cm, giving a maximum magnification of 0.18x for close subject framing.

Build and handling

The lens is physically substantial: around 10 cm long, 7.6 cm in diameter and 555 g on the scales. It is neither the lightest nor the most compact 35mm F1.4 available, but its dimensions match most of the rest of the range apart from the 14mm F1.4. That consistency is deliberate. It means accessories, and 67 mm circular filters in particular, transfer between lenses without adjustment, and a gimbal set-up does not need rebalancing every time the lens is swapped. There is also a rear filter holder in addition to the front filter thread.

Build quality is excellent and weather sealing is thorough, with gaskets, the constant-length design and a special coating on the front element. The styling is restrained, with the red ring that signals Canon's L series.

Ergonomically, Canon has prioritised video. There is a stepless, smooth manual aperture ring marked in third-of-a-stop increments, with a lockable A position for automatic control. Photographers who prefer a clicked aperture ring will be disappointed and will have to fall back on the programmable ring at the front of the barrel, which is clicked but carries no markings at all. Alongside that sit a programmable button and a switch to disable autofocus on the lens.

In use, the clicked programmable ring is pleasant but noticeably noisy. The aperture ring moves fluidly enough for smooth exposure transitions, and the manual focus ring is wide and very pleasant to use, with ideal damping. It has no hard stops and drives the autofocus motors to move the elements rather than acting mechanically.

Measured sharpness

Laboratory testing recorded for this lens was carried out on a Canon EOS R5 Mark II, a 45-megapixel full-frame body producing 8192 x 5464 pixel files. The tests used Large 10 quality JPEGs with in-camera lens aberration corrections enabled. Canon applies fairly extensive digital corrections through its Digital Lens Optimizer, covering chromatic aberration, diffraction, the effect of the sensor's low-pass filter, vignetting and distortion; the optimiser was set to its standard level with all corrections active. Measurements were taken with image-analysis software and a dot chart, then supported by visual assessment of a standard test scene.

Sharpness is measured as blur in different zones of the frame - the centre, the two-thirds position and the corners - at varying apertures. The BxU (blur units) figure derives from a low-frequency MTF measurement that corresponds well to how the eye perceives detail. The closer BxU sits to zero, the sharper the image appears; blur becomes perceptible from -1.5, visible from -2.5 and strong from -3.5.

General optical performance is very good. The lens behaves consistently, with strong sharpness at the centre and at the two-thirds position from the widest aperture onwards. At F1.4 the sharpness level is already close to its peak, and it stays constant as the aperture closes down to F16, where diffraction sets in. Uniformity across to the frame edges is another matter. At F1.4 and F2 the gap between centre and edges is very large, narrowing progressively until near-perfect uniformity arrives at F5.6. Anyone who needs high, even sharpness across the whole frame at wide apertures will find that frustrating. By comparison, the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN Art, offered in Sony E and L-Mount, delivers better uniformity and higher sharpness at the widest apertures.

Distortion and chromatic aberration

Distortion is moderate for a 35mm lens, and Canon applies digital correction in-camera; the measured figure was 0.22%. Chromatic aberration, also corrected digitally in the body, is negligible and imperceptible, measured at around 0.01% on average.

The 35mm focal length in practice

A 35mm lens counts as a standard focal length, as does a 50mm. It is versatile and most often used for reportage. Being wider than a 50mm, it lets you include more context in a frame, which makes it effective for urban photography, whether that means street work, environmental portraits or architecture. It is also widely used for events such as weddings. On an APS-C body, the 1.6x crop turns it into a 56 mm equivalent, a longer standard that works well for portraits.

What the F1.4 aperture buys you

The very large maximum aperture is standard across Canon's professional L VCM primes and serves both creativity and versatility. The obvious benefit is the ability to work with pronounced background blur to isolate a subject at shallow depths of field, helped by the 11-blade circular diaphragm, which produces particularly soft bokeh and harmonious transitions between sharp and out-of-focus areas. The second benefit is practical: handheld shooting indoors or at night becomes far easier.

Vignetting and stabilisation

Vignetting, which the camera body corrects digitally, is fairly visible at F1.4. It becomes much less obvious as you stop down and is negligible by F2.8. Some photographers treat it as an artistic advantage that closes the frame and directs the viewer's eye; either way it is straightforward to correct in post-production.

There is no optical stabilisation in the lens, as is the case for the vast majority of fast primes of this type regardless of brand or mount. You therefore rely on in-body sensor stabilisation and the F1.4 aperture to keep handheld shutter speeds under control.

Alternatives in the RF mount

At the time of the recorded test, there was no third-party 35mm F1.4 in full-frame RF mount. Canon does offer a slower standard-range alternative in the RF 35mm F1.8 IS Macro STM.
