Overview
The Acer Swift 16 AI is a large-format laptop built around multimedia use. It pairs a 16-inch OLED panel with Intel's latest mobile silicon and integrated graphics capable of handling films, series and occasional gaming. The same graphics architecture also appears in handheld consoles such as the MSI Claw EX AI+.
The rest of the configuration follows the same brief: 32 GB of memory, 1 TB of storage, an enormous touchpad and comprehensive connectivity that even runs to a microSD card reader.
Build and design
The brushed aluminium lid carries the Acer logo and a few decorative striations. Opening it reveals the OLED panel and, above all, its particularly glossy finish, since this model is a touchscreen.
The backlit keyboard includes a numeric keypad, which will please anyone doing regular figure work. Typing has no particular flaw, although there is a slight lack of rigidity and a small amount of flex towards the centre of the deck.
The touchpad is simply enormous, running almost edge to edge between the keyboard and the front of the chassis. The glide is good and Windows gestures are registered without difficulty. It can also act as a graphics tablet with the bundled stylus, which is useful for anyone who works that way, even if such users are not especially common. The surface offers haptic feedback in the manner of Apple's MacBook trackpads, with the exception of the MacBook Neo, vibrating to simulate a left or right click.
Size is not automatically an advantage, however. In use, palms regularly brushed the touch surface, at which point index-finger input stopped registering. It is a small ergonomic problem that Acer appears to have overlooked at the design stage.
Connectivity and cooling
Connectivity is one of the machine's strong suits, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports that support charging, two USB 3.2 ports, HDMI, a headphone socket and a microSD card reader, distributed more or less evenly on either side of the keyboard.
For wireless, Acer uses an Intel Killer Wi-Fi 7 BE1775s chip, which is ultimately a rebadged BE211 aimed at gaming laptops. It delivers Wi-Fi 7 in full, with 4K-QAM, 320 MHz channels and the 6 GHz band, while Bluetooth 6 completes the set.
The webcam and its Full HD sensor are less convincing. The image is coarse even under excellent lighting and falls apart in low light, and the Windows Studio Effects handled by the processor's NPU do not rescue it.
Cooling is substantial, with two heat pipes feeding two radiators and two fans. The processor is comfortable and has 65 W to work with. In use the machine stays fairly quiet, even after 15 minutes of video encoding: 34.3 dB was recorded at 50 cm from the screen, a relatively low figure, especially as the fans rarely spin up. The processor has to be worked genuinely hard before they make themselves heard. Thermal imaging matched that impression, with a temperature of 46 °C recorded beneath the hinge during a full encode.
Performance
The configuration tested carried an Intel Core Ultra X9 388H with 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD. The X9 388H uses Intel's latest Panther Lake architecture, with four performance cores, eight efficient cores and four very low-power cores. The Core Ultra X parts are further distinguished by integrated graphics with 12 Xe3 cores, also used in Intel Arc G3 Extreme processors for handheld consoles.
With that chip, the Swift 16 AI records a performance index of 82. That places it just below the Samsung Galaxy Book6 Pro 16 and its Core Ultra X7 358H, which is nominally the less powerful part, a reminder that a properly cooled processor can be more effective than one clocked 300 MHz higher. There are few surprises here: the Swift 16 AI holds its rank, and the Core Ultra 300 processors have progressed mainly on graphics and power consumption.
On that graphics front, the Intel Arc B390 is well supported by content-creation software and cuts rendering times sharply. A Blender scene rendered almost six times faster, a Premiere export was 4.3 times quicker, and a batch of 10 photographs in Photoshop was processed 3.6 times faster.
In practice, the Swift 16 AI is ready for demanding office work and occasional content creation. Anyone using those applications more regularly would be better served by a model with discrete graphics.
Gaming is also on the menu. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1920 x 1200 with the Very High preset, the machine returned 60 frames per second without XeSS upscaling. That confirms the Arc B390 as the most capable integrated graphics block available, setting aside Apple's M5 Pro and Max chips, which play in another category. For scale, the Arc B390 sits just below an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 while retaining an advantage in energy efficiency.
Storage comes from a SanDisk SN5000S SSD, which recorded 6.3 GB/s read and 5.5 GB/s write. No notable slowdown appeared while transferring the 130 GB of files used during testing.
Screen
Acer has fitted an OLED panel running 2880 x 1800 pixels at 120 Hz. It is also a touchscreen, for those who cannot resist touching the display.
Under a colorimeter the OLED panel returned a delta E of 4.4, slightly above the threshold of 3 beyond which colour deviation becomes visible to the eye. Colour temperature was measured at 6745 K, a little above the 6500 K video standard, but nothing serious. The real shortcoming is the absence of any colour controls or profile management, despite the twenty or so applications the manufacturer preinstalls.
An OLED panel naturally brings near-perfect contrast and a response time below 1 ms.
The other flaw is the lack of an anti-reflective treatment. Reflectance was measured at 63 per cent, close to a record in laboratory testing, since certain Asus Zenbooks had reached 65 per cent. That is all the more surprising given that Acer previously sold a Swift Edge 14 AI with an impressive matt panel and a record-low reflected-light figure of 6 per cent.
Maximum brightness does not rescue legibility, still less outdoors, with a peak of 398 cd/m² recorded, which nonetheless remains more than sufficient indoors. HDR peaks at 600 cd/m², and that is not enough for genuine HDR rendering in games or films.
Audio
Acer has placed two speakers underneath the chassis. That position does the sound no favours: the result depends on the surface the laptop is resting on, and the openings can be blocked by soft surfaces such as a duvet or a pillow, muffling the output.
Listening is a disappointment. The rendering is nasal and the absence of bass is conspicuous on a laptop built for multimedia use.
The headphone output saves face, with high dynamic range, imperceptible distortion and enough channel separation to reproduce stereo effects correctly. Only the output level is too modest to drive high-impedance headphones properly.
Battery life
The Swift 16 AI carries a 70.2 Wh battery, an average capacity among 14- and 16-inch ultraportables.
On a test procedure simulating office work, the machine lasted 6 hours and 28 minutes. That places it in the middle of the 16-inch laptops measured under the same procedure. Anyone planning a long day away from a desk should plan to carry the 65 W USB-C charger.
Repairability
Reaching the components requires the removal of eight screws. Inside, the memory and the Wi-Fi card are soldered, while the SSD, hidden under a ribbon cable, and the battery are easy to access.
Alternatives
The closest comparisons are the Asus ZenBook A16 and Samsung Galaxy Book6 Pro 16. The ZenBook is lighter but its X2 Elite graphics lag behind, while the Samsung uses an equivalent processor and returned slightly better battery life in the source's comparison.
